Serendipities language and lunacy6/8/2023 ![]() For example, Christopher Columbus assumed that the world was much smaller than it is, land so he assumed he could find a quick route to the East via the West. I was partially attracted to Serendipities because of the title, but it's not an easy to read novel, but rather a non-fiction study.Įco looks at mistakes that have shaped human history. ![]() There are secret symbols and coded manuscripts in a higher level version of the Dan Brown novel formula. ![]() Eco isĪnd he mixes in Aristotle, Thomas Aquinas and Roger Bacon. Brother William of Baskerville arrives to investigate and the story is a medieval mystery with a series of seven murders. That novel takes place in 1327 in an Italian Franciscan abbey that is suspected of heresy. It is about some riddles of history and the "linguistics of the lunatic." I am an Umberto Eco reader and first noticed him, as many people did, with his novel The Name of the Rose. Umberto Eco's book, Serendipities: Language and Lunacy, is not a book about education or technology. “Serendipity is looking in a haystack for a needle and discovering a farmer’s daughter.” - Julius Comroe ![]()

Late Harvest by Yvonne Whittal6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() One of their first confrontations has him almost choking the life out of her. When they reunite for the sake of the plot moppet's convenient illness (which magically disappears as soon as they step back in hero's home), the hero is in a rage and is not afraid to give way to his instincts. So in an inspired, but unfortunately short-lived, moment, she did leave him and managed to create for herself and her son a pretty good life. ![]() When she questioned him about their relationship, he initially gave her the big freeze, which turned into anger and scorn, and finally he told her that if she left him, she better never set foot in his home again. The reason she left him in the first place is because she kept on bumping into him and a deranged OW with her arms draping all over him every time she turned a corner of their home. The heroine is his estranged wife and mother of his seekret baby (now 3 years old) who through the necessary BIG PLOT CONTRIVANCE has to run back to him after a long separation and endure even more humiliation and abuse than during the first go round when he married her. I thought I had read enough of Yvonne Whittal's books to have survived her most jerky non-heroes but the male protagonist in Echo in the Valley really went out of bounds and I can safely say that this was the worst HP I have ever read in my life, so far. ![]()

The 5th wave books in order6/7/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Wallace's writing doesn't allow you breaks or breathers. Wallace commands your undivided attention and let's say if you are demanding the luxury of a split second of thinking something unrelated in the middle of a page and then coming back to that same point in a page, resuming reading and achieving your former state of involvement with the story right away, you couldn't be asking for more. Interestingly enough I have neither associated this particular term with books making use of the much revered and equally feared stream-of-consciousness as a narrative device nor with hefty tomes worth more than 1000 pages.īut getting through even 1 page of DFW's writing requires a Herculean effort on the reader's part. I finally understand what the word 'tedium' means. ![]()
